When dealing with creditors and the companies that do the collecting for the original creditor, it is important to get the debt validated. This is done by disputing the debt that is owed. If you don't believe the debt is yours, are unsure of the amount or cannot remember if it is yours, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) gives you the right to dispute the debt. If you want to dispute the debt, you need to do so in writing. Disputing a debt will not get rid of the debt, but it allows you time as a debtor and helps in later lawsuits; as well as stops the creditor from reporting to the credit bureaus (at least until the debt is validated).
The following letters can be used when disputing debts. They are free of charge. Please feel free to change the letter to fit your unique situation.
